What Breath Can Teach Us About Letting Go
Instead of more love, more money, more health; whatever it is you so desire, oftentimes, you first need to release what's stopping that flow from moving in.
This is where the power of breath can be our greatest teacher.
Think about how the natural flow of breathing works.
You can't fill up your lungs to the top and continue sipping in more breath. There comes a point where you can't possibly hold any more air. You can't possibly hold your breath any longer and you must exhale.
Many of us are full. Full of emotions, desires, wants, needs, schedules, emails, text messages, demands, and the busyness of the world around us.
We’re filled to the brim. Holding it all. Carrying it. Trying to step lightly and not let it spill over the edge and out of our control.
But where is the space?
Where is the ease and lightness in that?
Where is the novelty?
Where does the fresh air move into if you’re still holding the stale air at the top of your lungs, filling all the crevices? Maximizing capacity and desperately trying not to exhale.
Try it.
Fill up your lungs, to the brim, sip in a bit more, a little more, more.
Hold it.
Keep holding it.
Eventually, you have to exhale. You have to release it.
Put it down.
Let it go.
Let it leave.
Then, like breath, the inhale comes naturally, without thought or forced intention.
Life is like breath.
Let it breathe.
